Brown eyes look great in light pinks, and browns. Golds hue your eyes very nicely, and a light OR dark green will look very good but earthy. Burnt oranges look great, too!

You haven't told us what your complexion tone is. Golden tones are great on dark skin, but might look artificial on fair skin. If you use purple on pale skin, it might look like you're bruised.
Go to the PL and look through some of the professional makeup books. Find someone who looks like you and see what the artist did to achieve the look. There are also makeup sites on the web, many of them run by the makeup companies where you enter your information and they suggest colors.
For example, I too have dark brown eyes, but have a fair Celtic complexion, so black eye liner and mascara look harsh. I use brownish black mascara for special occasions and clear for every day. My liner is chocolate on top and khaki brown under my lashes. It looks natural, not scary. Have fun finding your style.
A nice purple brings out the tones of the brown.
It's best to first use a base, then a light lavender on the lid. Then in the crease use a darker plum but not harsh, you need to smudge it a make it fluid. Add a violet liner and black or brown mascara
Here are a few videos that I found on youtube that will help you achieve the look that you are looking for.
These videos are step by step videos as well.
Hope this helps.
