How do you do good under eye make up for day time / night time?

I'm pale, with auburn hair and brown eyes. I like doing natural make up, but want to add a little to my lower lash. i find that eyeliner is too heavy, I want something softer for day time, that won't run, or wash out quickly.How do you do good under eye make up for day time / night time?
